Physics on Stage 2 Report

In order to build on the success of the first Physics on Stage, a second programme was launched which culminated in an international festival for physics teachers at ESTEC in Noordwijk, Holland, from April 2nd to April 6th, 2002. The delegates from Ireland exhibited physics demonstration material at the Irish stand and attended the national presentations and physics workshops at the conference. A particular aim of the Irish National Steering Committee (NSC) for Physics on Stage 2 is to produce a resource of teaching methods and materials that will be effective in supporting physics teachers and interesting young people in science. The ultimate aim of PoS is to establish a permanent European foundation to provide a direct link between physics teachers and the Intergovernmental Research Organisations such as CERN, ESA and ESO.

For PoS2 the Irish NSC planned to develop a resource of practical demonstrations and ideas for teaching physics in secondary schools. All second level teachers in Ireland were invited to submit their best teaching ideas and six people were chosen to represent Ireland at the festival in ESTEC. As well as promoting their own ideas, the Irish delegates were asked to identify and record the best ideas of the other delegates seen at the exhibition stands, the presentations and the workshops. On their return, the objectives followed:

1. Teachers handbook

To produce a high quality resource document detailing the demonstration experiments, projects and ideas brought to and selected from the Physics on Stage festival.

2. Distribution

To distribute the document to all Irish physics teachers.

3. European contacts

To develop and strengthen contacts with physics teachers in Europe.
