Minister launches physics industry report

The report examining the importance of Physics in the economic life of Ireland was launched by Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Mr Micheál Martin, TD, on October 11, 2007 at the Merrion Hotel in Dublin.
Highlights from the report include:
- 85,000 jobs are in physics based sectors in Ireland (5.3% of all jobs in the economy). This compares with 82,000 jobs in the banking, finance and insurance sector
- High productivity of the physics based sector ? the gross value added (GVA) per employee in 2005 was around 150,200 per annum which is 88% higher than the national average
- Significant support from this sector to activity in the wider economy e.g. in 2005 the spending of physics-based sectors on intermediate goods and services helped support 69,100 jobs and ?6.1 billion worth of GVA in the supplier sectors.
